Netgear unveils new range of smart switches for PoE devices

Posted on

Networking provider Netgear has introduced a new family of smart managed switches designed specifically to support the deployment of advanced, high-density Power over Ethernet (PoE) and PoE+ devices.
There are three standalone switches in the range, which offer a variety of port counts and PoE power budgets in order to meet both the current and future needs of wireless converged networks. The switches are aimed primarily at small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) in sectors such as hospitality, catering, education and retail that require network efficiency, operational cost savings and ease of management.
The entry-level hardware is the GS510TLP 8-Port Gigabit Smart Managed Switch, which also comes with two SFP ports. This features a fanless design for silent desktop operation and supports the deployment of PoE+ devices with a power budget of up to 75W. Netgear said this makes it an ideal choice for cost-conscious organisations looking to deploy the device in conference rooms, open space offices, healthcare centres or other noise-sensitive environments.
Next in the range is the GS510TPP 8-Port Gigabit Smart Managed Switch, which also has eight PoE+ copper ports and two dedicated SFP ports for fibre uplinks. However, this offering enables the use of PoE+ devices of up to 190W and is aimed at network managers who will need to support denser deployment of PoE+ devices as their business grows.
Finally, the GS418TPP Easy-Mount 16-Port Gigabit Smart Managed Switch comes with 16 PoE+ copper ports, as well as two dedicated Gigabit SFP fibre ports for aggregation to the network core. With the ability to support PoE+ devices of up to 240W, this device will benefit companies that are buying infrastructure for the long term and need to be prepared for the growth in dense deployments of PoE+.
The GS418TPP also comes with a slim design and Netgear's Virtually Anywhere mounting system, which allows for vertical, horizontal, flat or perpendicular placement wherever is needed. Netgear stated: "Whether it's on the wall, strapped to a pole, under a desk or tabletop, in air passageways, or above drop-down ceilings, this unique mounting system enables a network manager to optimise placement of power-hungry access points, IP cameras, or VoIP endpoints, and ensure cabling efficiency even outside the rack."
All three switches include powerful Layer 2+ and Layer 3 Lite features and have been designed specifically for use as part of converged networks where voice, video and data are carried on a single platform.
Richard Jonker, vice-president of product line management for SMB products at Netgear, said that as more PoE devices become prevalent, they will put additional strain on switching power demands.
He added: "We designed our three new Smart Switches with PoE+ as we understand the importance of providing a wide choice of port counts and power budgets that can adapt to business needs, along with quiet operation and flexible placement options."
