Netgear introduces new switch to boost PoE devices

Posted on

Networking device manufacturer Netgear has announced the introduction of a new 24-port managed switch that aims to help small and medium-sized businesses manage their Power over Ethernet (PoE) enabled devices.

The GS724TPv2 24-Port Gigabit PoE+ Smart Managed Pro Switch has been purposely designed for converged networks where data, voice, video and IoT traffic are all carried over a single network platform. With 24 PoE+ copper ports and two dedicated SFP ports for fibre connectivity to the network core, network managers are able to connect up to 24 devices, such as wireless access points, IP security cameras, LED lighting, or VoIP endpoints to the network using a single cable that delivers both power and data connectivity.

The device offers a robust power budget of 190W, allowing users to hook up even the most power-hungry endpoints and supports denser deployment of PoE+ devices, which the manufacturer says will be a particular benefit for "cautious-spender organisations".

Richard Jonker, vice-president of product line management for SMB products at Netgear, said the GS724TPv2 has been designed to offer a cost-effective solution to support the switching needs of small and medium-sized enterprises for wireless converged networks, IP surveillance, IP telephony and IoT.

"Even better, organisations that want to prepare for growth and buy infrastructure for the long-term will find that it's 190W PoE power budget provides headroom for future expansion," he continued.

Advanced features of the device include Access Control Lists (ACLs), L2/L3/L4 QoS (DiffServ), LACP link aggregation and Spanning Tree, which should be enough to meet the requirements of even the most advanced small business networks.

The rackmount GS724TPv2 also comes with Energy Efficient Ethernet (IEEE 802.3az) for maximum power savings and operates quietly even at full power as a result of its temperature and load-based fan-speed control.

It also boasts a non-blocking switching architecture with 52Gbps line rate fabric for maximum throughput across all 24 ports of Gigabit Ethernet, in full duplex mode.

Users of the device also benefit from an easy-to-use, browser-based graphical user interface that makes managing the switch as simple as possible. Each of the 24 PoE ports can be individually controlled through this for remote power management of PoE connected devices such as operation scheduling.

According to Netgear, the GS724TPv2 is ideally suited for advanced SME organisations that are looking for the best combination of features, performance and value. It will be of particular interest to companies in sectors such as the hospitality, education, and retail industries.
